Of course, the rumors are true: Los Cabos, and especially the coastal town of Cabo San Lucas, delivers in nightlife culture. But don’t believe that this Baja California region is only for romantic couples or young Millennials and Gen Z’s coming to have a weekend-long fiesta. Oceanside stays, such as the Hacienda Del Mar Resort, Los Cabos, provide a coastal escape as family-friendly luxury resorts in Mexico.

Rooms and Villas

Located just 20 minutes from the Cabo San Lucas city center, the Hacienda del Mar resort sits on the edge of the Sea of Cortez and abuts the Cabo del Sol golf course. Built in the style of the hacienda, it delivers a true taste of traditional Mexican culture while boasting modern amenities. White labeled under Marriott (attractive to those Marriott Bonvoy members), there are 270 rental rooms in total. Another 272 are reserved for Hacienda del Mar members.

The Hacienda Garden Room King is perfect for a short stay, while a multi-room villa is the way to go for a big family retreat. The villas come equipped with kitchens, sitting areas, and private balconies looking out over either the sea or the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. The resort is not all-inclusive, so having a kitchen comes in handy when you want to spend the evening cooking at your home away from home. And the balconies in all rooms are great for a morning cup of coffee while watching the golden Baja California sun rise, or for some sunshine while you get some remote working done.

Dining Experience

On the other hand, the restaurants at the resort are top-tier, and are not to be missed. In particular, and a local favorite, Pitahayas, is part of the resort’s origin story. The resort was built up and around this famous Los Cabos restaurant, which originally opened its doors in 1995, delivering fresh Pacific Rim Cuisine. Today, you can enjoy a modern renovation that infuses traditional Mexican flavors into the menu–all while watching orca whales jump in and out of the ocean as your evening’s entertainment. A highlight of this particular restaurant is what’s beneath: La Cava de Santiago, a dark and cozy wine cellar with hundreds of wines from around the globe. You can set up a wine tasting or even a cooking demonstration at Pitahayas with the concierge at Hacienda del Mar upon arrival.

As another option, you can grab a burger or a steak at the De Cortez Grillhouse for some mesquite cuisine by candlelight. Like Pitahayas, it is a Five Star Diamond Award-winning restaurant. They each serve up classic dishes with Pacific twists that are elegant in presentation and mouth-watering with each bite. And for lunch, you can stop for a taco and a margarita at Las Sirenas, just steps away from the infinity pool and the activity pool. It’s open for snacks and cocktails during the day, perfect after taking a long swim and breathing in the magnificent views–or participating in group water aerobics. Of course, there are plenty of other options for dining (including some that serve up hot breakfast) such as Tomates Restaurant, El Burro Cansado, and La Suerte, among others. To note, you can also request tequila tasting with a professional sommelier on site. And finally, for the adults who don’t want to emerge from a dip in the pool, you can indulge in the luxury of swim-up bars.

For the Kids

But what about the kids? Not only are there two kids’ pools for your child to splash around and make new friends, but there’s also a Kid’s Club for 4- to 12-year-olds that is open from 9 am to 5 pm. They have daily programming that you can participate with your child in for free. Or, you can opt to treat yourself to some alone time, and drop your kids off at the club for daycare. While you take part in one of the resort’s activities such as Zumba, bingo, volleyball, or black jack, your child can take a Spanish lesson, create a mosaic, or learn the art of tie dye. You can book this service for 1 hour or up to a full 5 days. Prices range from $10 to $140. With dollhouses, craft bins, plush bean bags, and plenty of toys, your child will be entertained for hours. Not to mention the trampoline right outside…any child’s happy place!

Shopping, Spa, and Adventure

If you decide you do want that alone time, consider relaxing at the Hacienda del Mar’s Cactus SPA™. While members get full access to the spa, single-time renters will have to book separately for their massage or treatment. Be sure to allocate some much-needed few hours of rest and rejuvenation, as you’ll want to take full advantage of the sauna and the temperature controlled pools in this quiet oasis.

Important for families taking a long stay at the resort, a convenience store called Los Portales is available when you are in need of some last-minute toiletries; food for your room or villa; and toys, stuffed animals, goggles, and blow-up tubes to keep the kids prepped and entertained for the entire visit. If you are looking for other shopping experiences, you can of course take a taxi to Cabo San Lucas or San Juan del Cabo (under 30 minutes away). Additionally, the entrance to the main hacienda at the resort is also home to artisan shops, where you can pick up a souvenir or a new outfit to wear at the poolside. One of the most popular stops? The coffee shop. Get up early and start your day with an espresso and a concha.

Sure, there’s plenty to do on resort grounds, but you should take the time to browse some outside experiences and day trips, such as visiting the famous arch of Cabo San Lucas, whale watching, or off-roading in the desert. Plus, Medano, Chileno, and Lover’s Beach, among others, are only a quick car ride away, so you have more than one beach to discover during your stay.

Other Amenities and Special Events

While we are all eager to get a Mezcalita or Sangrita in our hands and kick our feet up on a pool chair, it’s also nice to note some other amenities: a full fitness center, rental car/airport shuttle services, laundry facilities, and WiFi for the bleisure vacationer. They’ll even pick you and your family up in a golf cart to drive you from the main hacienda entrance straight to your villa door, which is especially essential for those with limited mobility.

Their cultural events during holidays like Mexican Independence Day and Dia de Los Muertos are unmatched. The whole community gets involved by dressing up, eating a variety of classic Mexican cuisine, dancing and singing with local artists, and participating in specific holiday traditions. Mexican Independence Day even comes with a display of fireworks and El Grito de Independencia (The Independence Cry) that aligns with the 11:00 pm grito in Mexico City. These events bring you and your kids closer to understanding the region’s customs–an important aspect of traveling anywhere!

Hacienda del Mar stands out with its traditional Mexican hacienda design and carefully crafted cuisine, and it maintains an authentic Los Cabos feel while granting you a lavish vacation by the sea. Bring the entire family, whether it’s young children or your older parents, and soak up the sunshine and calming Sea of Cortez breeze for your next luxury resort getaway in Mexico.
