One of the greatest things a resort can provide is activities for families to do at the hotel. Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort offers daily cultural activities that guests can participate in. At the resort, Colleen and the crew had the pleasure of making leis, taking hula lessons on the beach, and learning how to play the ukulele.
Leis are part of an old tradition in Polynesian culture, intended to show affection from one person to another. Decorating someone with a beautiful necklace made of flowers, nuts, sticks, and animal bones symbolized a greeting or farewell. Today, leis are still used to greet visitors, especially at airports when arriving in Hawaii.
Hula dancing and ukulele playing are not as easy as they sound! Both require good memorization and steady rhythm. The people who taught these activities at Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort were very helpful and patient, teaching at a slow pace and making sure everyone was on the same page. Hearing their stories and tips throughout the lessons made for an incredibly enjoyable time.
